Meet author Annabella Lowe

Annabella Lowe lives in East Anglia, UK, with her husband, son, two crazy cocker spaniels, and an evil cat. Alongside writing, she has a children's photography business and co-owns a wedding photography business, which keeps her on her toes and her creativity flowing.

A born daydreamer, Annabella is drawn to fantasy, especially when seasoned with romance, and is slowly building her beloved book collection. You can find her championing other authors on Booksta and building friendships with the amazing book community.

Her debut novel, Find Me in the Shadows, was born from a vivid dream she had many years ago and has fulfilled one of her lifelong goals to write and publish a book.

If you could be friends with one character in your debut novel, who would it be? Why?

This is tough. But I would have to say Rory, as I know he would make me laugh, but he would also be protective and take care of me, and I wouldn't feel bad having a massive crush on him because he's technically single!

What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d known when you first started writing?

I wish I'd spent time ironing out all of my character motivations when I started my first draft. I am so much more particular about this when drafting book 2, and I think it makes everything tighter so much sooner!

What was the first piece you ever wrote?

As a teenager, I started writing a gang-based novel. The MC was a young lad called Devon who got mixed up in a gang rivalry and ended up in prison for saving his sister!

Was there anything else you wanted to be, besides a writer, when you were a kid?

Growing up, I wanted to be an equestrian vet, but I realised when I got to high school that I'd need to be incredibly good at science, and there died the dream!

What’s your favorite show to binge-watch?

I could watch Wednesday over and over again, and also The Big Bang Theory

What are some helpful tips you would give a fellow writer who’s having a hard time plotting, developing, etc.?

There are so many great plotting devices out there to help tighten up a story. I've just discovered Lore Forge, which is free, and it enables you to visualise your plot as well as keep all the story components in one easy place.

Generally, I would also say getting to know your characters really well and making sure they stay consistent is an enormous help, as often plot holes can arise from motivations that feel off or don't make sense.

If your core main characters could say one thing about you, what do you think (or hope) they would say?

I think my characters would say, "How could you?"
