The author is a doctor and editor who lives in Texas with her husband and children.
She enjoys trying to stay in shape, sporadically cooking, reading (still), writing, and working on her blog.
She is eternally grateful to the woman who donated a kidney to her over seven years ago and continues to advocate for organ donation as much as she can.
Meet D.W.:
If you could be friends with one character in your debut novel, who would it be? Why?
I would be friends with my main character Jamison. She was originally based on me with
a lot of backstory and drama that I DON’T have.
But I think she would be a fun person to know because she tries to help and cares about people even if she doesn’t always make great personal decisions. I would always be worried that she would get herself killed, but I guess that’s the trade-off. She’s pretty sarcastic too—my kind of person!
What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d known when you first started writing?
I wish I hadn’t stopped writing. When the childhood writing dream ended, I stopped
writing regularly. I wish I had continued. I would have more works finished, and my
writing would have improved sooner.
What’s your favorite board game? Cards? Group activity?
I was a big card player. At first, I played a lot of Solitaire, and then, when I had fellow
players, I spent most of my childhood and college years playing the card game Spades.
I attended the YMCA Summer program from 7 to 10 or 11 while my parents worked
and attended college. One counselor there sat me down and taught me how to play.
Solitaire because I was an only child. She was right—I did play a lot.
But Spades was my forte. I learned by watching my parents and their friends play Spades
at almost every weekend gathering. They would make dinner and talk trash as they
played in teams well into the night. Those nights are some of my core memories as a
child. I carried that mentality to my college card games. I miss playing.
What is a goal you’re still waiting to start?
Since mystery/thriller is one of my favorite genres to read, I would like to create a
mystery story of my own. It’s a little farther down on my list of goals to complete, but it
is definitely one I would like to try.
Did you want to be anything else besides a writer when you were a kid?
While my original goal was to be a writer, by the time I was eleven, I wanted to be a
physician.
My father wanted me to see that there were many career options for me. My uncle, a
physician, got my family tickets to his medical school graduation when I was 11.
While I was there, I met a future neurosurgeon named Elizabeth Luck. She sat and talked to me about why she became a physician and wanted to be a neurosurgeon. She treated
me like I was more than a kid who got dragged to a graduation. She was so kind! I loved
her passion for what she did and was going to do! I wanted to be like her!
So, I set my sights on becoming a physician. After I graduated from medical school, I
found Dr. Luck and sent her a letter, which she replied to! While I am not practicing, I am
glad I went to medical school and the things it provided and learned.
What’s your favorite show to binge-watch?
It is a tie between Hawaii 5-0 (2010) or 24 (any season). Hawaii 5-0 is not high-brow
television. I enjoy having it on in the background when I am working. The scenery is
gorgeous, and I don’t have to expend much brain power to enjoy it.
24 is one of my favorite shows of all time.
I was an early adopter—I read about it before
it first aired, and after the first episode, my husband and I were hooked. Watching 24 was
part of our date nights when we first got married, and if they make a 24 movie. We will
be right there.
Do you swear? If so, what’s your favorite curse word? If not, what’s your go-to
exclamation when you’re mad/happy?
I do curse—and more now than I did when I was younger. As I have gotten older, I care
less about decorum. I tend to say the ‘F’ word more than any other word. I use it in my
books—I even made it the last word in one of them.
