Meet Nick J. Ripley:
Biggest fear?
As a kid, it was beheading. Had a babysitter as a kid who joked about cutting my head off. Scarred me for life. Now most of my books have beheading. Thanks, Beatrice.
Favorite genre?
Definitely Horror. I eat and breathe the genre, and most of my work usually has some sort of horror element in it. It's fun, like a rollercoaster. I get a thrill from watching or reading it.
Goal waiting to start?
I want to do graphic novels at some point and have some ideas for a few series. Still working on my first comic book, though. At a very painfully slow crawl, it is coming along.
What are some helpful tips you would give a fellow writer who’s having a hard time plotting, developing, etc?
Don't be afraid to write crap. Just word vomit on the page and don't worry about if it's good. Easier to edit a mess of words than a blank page.
What would you tell your younger self not to care about?
I think I would tell myself not to worry about other people's approval as much and just enjoy creating for creativity's sake. Life as an artist is much easier when you're not trying to appease anyone other than yourself.
If your core main characters could say one thing about you, what do you think (or hope) they would say?
I suppose the real question is do they know I'm writing their life? I'm pretty infamous with my readers for torturing my characters and making their lives a hell so I doubt they'd have nice things to say about me. I'm pretty mean to fictional people.
Was there ever a name you wanted to use for a character, but it didn’t fit their personality, so you had to change it?
Yes, actually, my upcoming book Aberration's antagonist. I originally based the book off my childhood boogeyman and wanted to call him what I called him during my childhood. Problem was, everytime I'd tell a friend the name, they'd die of laughter because it really is a silly name a kid would make up.
Needless to say, I don't think my ghostly embodiment of fear would be very frightening if I called him “Monster Skeleton” the whole book so the change to what it is now definitely was the best move, I think.
