Meet S.F. Sowter
If you could be friends with one character in your debut novel, who would it be? Why?
In Criminal Cove: Home for Retired Supervillains, there is a character who was originally meant to be kind of a throw-away character named Agent Stein. But as the story grew, he became really important. He is this federal agent who is really a giant nerd who just wants a girlfriend, and he is kind of modeled off several friends of mine. So yeah, I would hang out with Agent Mark Stein.
What’s your biggest fear?
I have a terrible fear of drowning. I’m terrified of having my face underwater. I’m getting better at it now that I take my kids swimming all the time. But mmm… Drowning, for sure.
What’s your favorite genre?
Horror. I love horror. I love getting scared. I love scaring people just give me the darkest, weirdest horror you can. Or monster stories! Frankenstein, Dracula, werewolves, I love monsters.
Did you have an invisible friend in your childhood? If so, what was their name?
I did! My invisible friend was a large dinosaur that lived under my childhood home. He didn't have a name, but he was a longneck dinosaur that was mostly blue with yellow spots.
What’s your favorite show to binge-watch?
The Simpsons! Always. Always makes me feel good!
If you had a soundtrack to your life, right now, what would the first five songs be?
So Busted — Culture Abuse
Something Good — Alt J
Here I dreamt I was an Architect — The Decemberists
Drinking Song for the Socially Awkward — The Amazing Devil
Frightening Fishes — Benjamin Gibbard and Tom Howe
Do you swear? If so, what’s your favourite curse word? If not, what’s your go-to exclamation when you’re mad/happy?
I’m a big fan of cussing! Horse shit is one of my favs when mad. I also speak Australian Sign Language, and swearing in sign is awesome.
