Hello! Please help me introduce my friend, author, and super cool mom: Christine Drummond!
Christine's a working mom living outside New York City, and when she's not writing about druids or chasing my two daughters around, she works as a marketing executive.
While Kingdom of the Owl is her debut novel, she's been an avid fantasy reader and writer for decades.
In a former life, she wrote a food blog about her journey through Culinary School, published in the Huffington Post.
Outside of writing, you can find her with her family, hiking, or trying every Asian-Fusion restaurant in a ten-mile radius.
1. If you could be friends with one character in your debut novel, who would it be? Why?
I'd love to be friends with my male main character, Will Noctura, because let's face it: who doesn't want to be friends with their book boyfriends? But since I'm married, I'd pick Jules, my FMC Addie's best friend.
Jules is the perfect mix of support, snark, and independence.
She gets MEGA interesting in book two!
2. What’s your favorite genre?
If I had to pick one, I'd say Romance—it's tough for me to feel satisfied by a story without romantic moments, although there are exceptions. But Fantasy will always have my heart, so most books I read, and write, are heavy on both love and magic.
3. What was the first piece you ever wrote?
I love this question! The first piece I ever wrote (that I can remember) was a short story called, "Mysteria" about a girl who travels to a magical realm, finds a unicorn, and saves the day.
While I wrote "Mysteria" when I was eight, I guess that story stayed with me because my debut, Kingdom of the Owl, is about a young woman named Addie who travels to an enchanted realm, discovers her powers, and a trusty steed, and saves the day. Talk about coming full circle!
4. What would you tell your younger self not to care about?
As a type-A eldest daughter, I would tell my younger self to stop revolving life around the preferences and comfort of others and focus more self-discovery. I might have gotten serious about writing much sooner if I hadn't been so focused on pleasing others. I explore this theme deeply in Kingdom!
5. Do you have any words/tropes you won’t write in your genre?
I LOVE tropes and believe that readers appreciate when those promises are delivered in books/movies. My book has several: One bed and one horse, in the same chapter, strangers to lovers, hidden powers, mental health rep, etc.
One trope I'll never write is "Love as a Cure-All." In fact, my Threllwood series turns plans to turn trope on its head, with an unexpected reaction to the beloved "fated mates" trope!
