Lorin Coffler has been telling stories with immersive settings and memorable characters since she was little.
After losing touch with her creative writing roots while working in the business world, she has rekindled her love of spinning tales with the flame burning brightest when she writes fantasy romance.
Today, Lorin is pursuing plans to self-publish her debut novel, Sun, Moon & Shadow, in 2025.
When she isn’t toiling as a corporate cog, Lorin can be found feverishly plotting future writing projects, losing herself in a good book, or scaring herself silly watching horror movies. She runs on perfectionism and iced coffee and lives in New England with her husband and two children.
What’s your favorite genre?
I love fantasy because while there are certain expectations for the genre, there is so much flexibility for creativity and experimentation. For example, I’m writing a book with fae characters, and there is existing lore around fae. But I’ve created some interesting lore for my interpretation of them and their limitations. I love the freedom to make the rules fantasy provides.
What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d known when you first started writing?
Perfectionism is the enemy of creativity. I’m a recovering perfectionist, and I’ve had to work very hard to overcome fear of sharing my work. I’ve accepted that my writing and my novel won’t be universally loved, but that doesn’t mean the story isn’t worth telling or that it won’t find its audience. I think that notion has been very freeing and allowed me to continue writing even when I have moments of doubting myself.
What was the first piece you ever wrote?
I wrote a portal fantasy when I was eight years old, complete with magical crystals, a girl who mysteriously disappeared years before, a bumbling dragon sidekick, and an evil wizard. I wrote mostly short stories in high school and college. I tried being a blogger when I was a new mom living abroad in Brazil. My current WIP (Sun, Moon & Shadow) is my first attempt at a novel, and I’m having so much fun with it.
What’s your favorite board game? Cards? Group activity?
I love Scrabble! I recently taught my children (ages 10 and 8) how to play, and we had a lot of fun. They need a bit of help, so often, it ends up being me playing against myself. But I don’t cheat! I help them get high-score words.
What is one kind of character (baker, ghost, strong female character) that every book you enjoy has in it?
I’m a sucker for a snarky sidekick. Something about a character that is super sarcastic but fiercely loyal gets me every time. I have one of these in my book; he’s a cynical wolf shifter who is quite prickly but helps my female main character overcome some of her emotional challenges.
What’s the biggest plot twist you never saw coming? (In any form of media)
I’m going to go with Bruce Willis being a ghost in The Sixth Sense. Sorry if that’s a spoiler! You’ve all had decades to see the movie. People say M. Night Shyamalan is predictable, but that first movie was epic and mind-blowing, in my opinion.
