R. E. Contreras has been telling stories for as long as she can remember. While working a variety of odd jobs in Hollywood, she spent her free time writing screenplays.

She later became an associate editor and writer for a magazine about film producing, where she honed her writing skills.

Her career then took her into the tech world, deepening her love for sci-fi.

In 2024, her short story The Rental was published in Daikaijuzine Magazine and was a finalist in Screencraft’s Cinematic Short Story competition. She is currently getting ready to query her debut novel.

Meet R.E. Contreras:

1. Was there anything else you wanted to be, besides a writer, when you were a kid?

I thought I was going to be a film director for the longest time. I even worked in the film industry for ten years! Fiction writing caught me by surprise. But my earlier aspirations help make my stories more cinematic, I'm fully envisioning the chapter I'm writing as a scene in a movie.

2. Did you have an invisible friend in your childhood? If so, what was their name?

Yes! His name was Greg, I wish I could remember more about him though.

3. What is one kind of character (baker, ghost, strong female character) that every book you enjoy has in it?

A detective! I have a very specific kind of book that I look for that is a mix of sci-fi or fantasy with mystery. And the need for more of this kind of mash-up was one thing that drove me to write my story.

4. What is something that you’ve learned and grown from over the last year?

This is kind of vague and something I'm currently trying to grasp more but seeing what in the story is blocking you from seeing solutions clearly. Sometimes shifting perspectives around and especially streamlining problems can open up different paths.

Speaking of streamlining, I found that when I wrote my query letter and was forced to distill my story down to a few paragraphs, it really gave me a lot of clarity and ideas.

5. What is something that you’ve learned and grown from over the last year?

Climbing the career ladder in a career that's not my dream. I wished I had focused more on writing when I was younger but better late than never!

6. If your core main characters could say one thing about you, what do you think (or hope) they would say?

I don't think they'd want to talk to me lol. They'd be mad at what I put them through and some of them I'd be downright afraid to meet!
