Meet Dawn Hudson

Dawn’s love affair with books and the magic of words began when she was three. Her family moved from ranch to ranch often, so she never had much, but her mother always made sure she had books.

Dawn discovered she could use words to create her magical worlds, characters, and stories as she grew older. She was first published in a local newspaper when she was ten.

In addition to writing, Dawn is a passionate teacher. She sees hope for the future and unlimited potential in each student. Nothing is more rewarding than when a student finally overcomes a challenge and “gets it.”

When she has free time, she hangs out with her husband, Dave, on their fifteen acres, tends to her garden and chickens, and enjoys the company of her six furbabies, who are the center of her world and why she works so hard . (They love their treats.)

Meet Dawn Hudson:

What’s the biggest plot twist you never saw coming? (In any form of media)

There are several movies that had plot twists that I never saw coming. (Spoiler Alerts). One, of course, is “The Sixth Sense.” Who would have guessed that Malcolm Crowe was dead? I liked how the movie showed all the clues that the audience should have picked up on. The second is “Identity.” First, I just love John Cusack. However, I never saw it coming that the little boy was the evil personality and would the one to survive. Again, the movie showed all the clues that the audience should have picked up on. The third is “Hide and Seek.” Again, I never saw the ending coming. The very last scene leaves the audience with their mouths hanging open.

What are some helpful tips you would give a fellow writer who’s having a hard time plotting, developing, etc.?

Walk away from the project for a minute. Breathe. Visit nature. Meditate. Work on something else. If you focus too hard on a project the answer will always elude you. But just like you wake up in the middle of the night with the answer to the one question that’s been bothering you all day, when you quit trying so hard to make it happen, it’ll happen.

What is the loftiest goal you’d like to reach as a writer?

To be able to write my own books and make a decent living from them.

Do you have any words/tropes you won’t write in your genre?

I would never use the word G**D***. I’ve had clients request certain story items from me, such as having a shifter turn into an animal while they’re having sex with a human. That’s a no-go. So is non-consent, underage, or anything that hurts kids, animals, the disabled, or the elderly. A client asked me to kill a dog in a book, and I refused the project because of it.

If your core main characters could say one thing about you, what do you think (or hope) they would say?

My main characters would likely ask, “What in the world is wrong with you?” The psychological story ideas that come to my mind might cause people to question my sanity.
