Teresa Louise Johnson is a Canadian writer living in Ontario with her husband and family. She has an MA in English Literature and Creative Writing from UWindsor.

To complete her degree, she wrote her first novella, Fire Island. After university, she worked as a reporter at a small-town newspaper.

She earned her 350-hour yoga teaching certificate and handed in her press pass for a yoga mat. Boneyard Café is the first of her series of fantasy novels, which span various dimensions but always return to Lee Dickens and the café in the graveyard.

Meet Teresa Louise Johnson:

  1. If you could be friends with one character in your debut novel, who would it be? Why

I would be friends with Mick, Lee’s demon companion. He’s been with her since she was born as her protector. He might annoy Lee and tease her sometimes, but he is fiercely loyal to her. He’s humorous, dangerous, and boy-next-door cute…until he isn’t. After all, he is a demon and shifts into a horned, winged, red, fiery fighter at will. He will learn as the books progress that inside his darkness, there is light as well.

  1. What would it be if you could live in any fictional town, city, or world

I want to live in a dimension called Vers (at least for a while.) There’s a fictional city there in the Boneyard Café series with an amazingly decadent street called Circus Street. Verisians dance the evenings away, on the street, and at parties. There’s a popular hotel there called The Surly Lion. There are performances and prophet shops that randomly pop up in dusty storefronts…and so much more.

  2. Did you have an invisible friend in your childhood? If so, what was their name

I don’t remember specific names, but I created imaginary worlds as a kid. I lived on a farm, and I’d run around acres of land and bush, entering different worlds and getting into adventures with the creatures and people who lived there.

  3. What villain would you pick if you had to go up against one villain in a novel

I’ve dealt with some trauma in my real life, which is why my own villains are dark and dangerous. It’s also why my books are full of hope, love, and friendship. I understand having to find that strength in myself to confront the villains in my life and what it can mean to have friends to support me. I wouldn’t want to go against any of my villains, but I think Arc (he shows up in Book Two but is featured in Book Three) would be the top choice because there’s one thing he wants, and there’s a chance I could help him get it and survive.

  4. What do you do to unwind from stress

I practice yoga and meditation. My mantra is, “You have enough, you do enough, you are enough.” It is my favorite activity besides reading and writing. Sparring (kickboxing) and jiu-jitsu are good ways to unwind, too.

  5. What helpful tips would you give a fellow writer having difficulty plotting, developing, etc.

Get out of the house for a new perspective. Go to a coffee shop, a library, or anywhere that you can sit for a while and just start writing. Also, make sure to read a lot! There’s nothing more inspiring than reading as many books as you can…and I mean any kind of book. I get a lot of inspiration from books about yoga and meditation, philosophy books, and of course, works of fiction.

  6. What would you tell your younger self not to care about

Don’t worry about what people think of you! People come and go from your life. Sometimes, you just have to let them go, and you can’t let their opinions travel along with you.

  7. What is the loftiest goal you’d like to reach as a writer?

I’d love to find my audience—those people who love my work and follow me to find out what’s next because they’re genuinely excited about it. Finding those people will mean everything to me.
